About Me

It is the 16th of December 2017.  Skies are very overcast and the light is tough for shooting.   I am on Orcas Island at Moran State Park's Cascade Lake.  There are only a few ducks on the main body of the lake but in the lagoon  is a family of 5 trumpeter swans.  I set out to do three hikes that afternoon, but I never get pass this hike - I stay and watch them grace the water with their presence.

About Me

It is the 10th of December 2017.  I am on the Padilla Bay Shore Trail , just outside of Anacortes.  I have 3 layers on...could use a few more.  Ahead of me is a very fast moving flock of birds that turn on a dime in the air and, as they change direction, they appear to alternate between black and white.  They land on the rocky shore along the northern-most part of the trail - they are dunlins.  They are cautious but I get surprisingly close as long as I move slowly.

About Me

It is the 29th of Oct 2017.  I am on the boardwalk at North Creek Park in my home town of Mill Creek.  It is a beautiful, sunny day and there are many song birds in the trees and tall grasses.  I spy a northern harrier in the distance.  She is hunting, flying very low and fast above the tall grasses.  I snap a few photos and am pleased with how they look against the backdrop of the Fall colors...

About Me

It is the 22nd of Oct 2017.  I am at the North Cascade Institute's campus on Diablo Lake.  Last night was the Harvest Dinner, a feast that for me means winter will soon be here.  Today, we hike to Sourdough Falls.  Almost immediately we run into several deer, including some leucistic mule deer with beautiful light-colored, almost white fur.  The rains have returned and the waterfall is beautiful.    For more information, visit the North Cascades Institute

About Me

It is the 16-17th Sep 2017.   I couldn't wait to get back to visit the Chelan Ridge Hawkwatch site...what a difference from last year (see photos below from last year).  Forest fires blanket the valleys and even the ridge is hazy - no night sky photography!  It is slight cooler than last year and definitely windier. But it is still a magical spot for raptors - - hawks, falcons and eagles floating along the ridge or soaring above in the skies. Kept food secured in case of bear; none came. But a moose walked through the campsite in the middle of the night!   For more information, visit Hawkwatch International or the North Cascades Institute

About Me

It's 27 August 2017.  Before us is Mount Baker (Koma Kulshan) and all I can say is...Wow!  On the Park Butte Trail just past the Stairway to Heaven cutoff to the Railroad Grade. Did I say it was the 27th of August - looks like Spring with all the blossoms.

About Me

It's the 26th of August 2017.  On the incredible Maple Pass Loop Trail .  Just over 11.2km/7miles, with an elevation gain of 600m/2,000ft.  Snow makes the trail hikeable only 3 months out of the year - but go and bring water.  Take Highway 20 fifty miles east of Marblemount.  In the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.

About Me

About Me
It's 23 June 2017.  At the Washington Pass Overlook in the North Cascades.  Elevation 1699m/5477ft.  Snow still on the grounds in places.   Incredible views of Liberty Bell and surrounding area in the daytime...we arrive at sunset with no moon and clear skies - we shoot for almost four hours straight.  With the North Cascades Institute night photography class led by Andy Porter
